Project SHINE in Tanzania

Nyuat (Hard working initiatives)

Nyuat aims to spread SHINE far and wide in communities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to see that others benefit from the project. Beneficiaries include women and children, out-of-school youth and those who are disabled who may not reached by educational campaigns, pregnant women, and others in the community.

The group offers education and awareness-raising outreach efforts within the community in partnership with a local hospital. Nyuat is also pursuing soap making as a social enterprise and is targeting safari lodges in the area as well as hoping to provide low cost soap for local markets in addition to increasing international sales.

Biosand filters

A biosand filter (BSF) is an adaptation of the traditional slow sand filter, which has been used for community drinking water treatment for 200 years.

Project SHINE in India

From 2016-2018 Project SHINE was adapted and implemented in two schools in Sri Puram India.

The project was adapted in order to translate SHINE to the southern Indian context and authentically incorporate the inputs of the local community into the project’s design. SHINE India included teacher trainings, school-based lessons, community mobilization events, workshops, a sanitation science fair, and several research sub-studies.
